Foils and highlights

Foils, from a few piecesto a full head.

Brightness that goes all the way to the root, in whatever quantity the hair and the budget will take.

What it is

A foil wraps the section while it lifts, which keeps the heat and the product where they were put. That is why foils get you brightness right up at the root in a way freehand painting does not, and it is why they are still what you want if you are chasing a clean, even blonde rather than a soft one.

How many you need is a real question with a real answer, and it is not always "all of them". A dozen around the face changes how you look in every photograph you will take this year. A half head lifts everything you can see when your hair is down. A full head is for when you want it bright underneath as well. Somebody will tell you which one you are actually describing.

Sometimes a dozen around the face is the whole answer.

How it goes

What actually
happens.

  1. Work out how many

Face-framing, half head or full head, decided by looking at how you wear your hair rather than by what sounds the most thorough. This is a conversation, and it is the one that saves you money.

  2. Sectioned and wrapped

Woven, wrapped and left to lift under watch. The weave is what decides whether the result reads as stripes or as hair, which is the part that takes the thirty years.

  3. Toned, then finished

Lifted hair is raw hair, and the tone put on top of it is what makes it cool, warm or neither. Washed, toned and blow-dried before you leave the chair.

What it costs

Quoted on your
hair, not a list.

Foils are quoted on what you are having rather than off a list, because a few pieces around the face and a full head are not the same job and should not carry the same number. Call and describe how you wear your hair, or come in and show us, and you will get the price before anything is mixed.

Questions

The things people
ask about this.

Anything not covered here, call 0499 927 027 or come up and ask.

How many foils do I need?

Fewer than most people assume. If your hair is usually down and you want it brighter around your face, a face-framing set does it. If you want lift everywhere you can see, that is a half head. A full head is for brightness underneath as well, which matters if you wear it up. Describe how you actually wear it and somebody will tell you which one you are describing.

How often do foils need redoing?

Every six to eight weeks for most people, because foils go right to the root and the root keeps growing. That is the trade: more brightness than balayage, more upkeep than balayage. If the maintenance is the problem, say so, and the answer is probably a mix of the two.

Can I have foils and balayage together?

Yes, and a lot of people should. Foils around the parting and the face for brightness where it is seen, balayage through the rest so the grow-out stays soft. It is one appointment, not two.

My blonde has gone brassy. Can you fix it?

Usually, and often without putting any more lift through your hair. Brassiness is a tone problem rather than a lift problem, so a toner is frequently the whole answer. If it turns out to be more than that, it is colour correction, and that conversation happens before anything starts rather than after.
